Belgian Beers, great food & Heafod Glen Wines

Swan Valley Western Australia

The Abbey

Welcome to “THE ABBEY” at Chester’s.

We invite you to come along and have an excellent meal at a great cost, superb wines along with a large selection of Belgium beers, enjoying our fantastic service in a warm and comfortable family friendly environment.

The Abbey at Chester’s is now under new management however the buildings still stands as tribute to its original owner Sydney Chester, who built the premises in 1890. The new managers are proud Australians living locally and wanting to bring a taste of Belgium into the Swan Valley.  With the new managers ancestry descending from Belgium they are serving a range of Belgium beers some of which are still made from the old authentic recipes of the 1600s.

The naming of the restaurant “The Abbey” was another connection to the beer with the original brewing completed by the monks in the old convents of Belgium. The Abbey logo shows a statue of “Mannekin Pis” an iconic piece of art which still stands in Brussels today.

The Cellar Door is still on site with the Heafod Glen’s full range of award-winning wines available for tasting and sale.  These wines are also available with your meal.

The restaurant seats 120 plus and is a casual, comfortable spot with friendly staff and a menu of simple foods at a great cost with well-loved classics including hearty steak, various woodfired pizzas, and yes, of course dessert options include Belgian waffles!

If you love excellent food and wine, real Belgian ales, a visit to The Abbey at Chester’s is a must-do when in the Swan Valley & Perth surrounds.

Product Highlight

Pauwel Kwak

Bosteels Brewery Buggenhout, Belgium

Pauwel Kwak is an amber ale brewed since the 1980s with 8.4% abv. Supposedly it is named after an 18th-century innkeeper and brewer, Pauwel Kwak. The beer is filtered before packaging in bottles and kegs.

As with other Belgian beers, Kwak has a branded glass with its own distinctive shape. It is held upright in a wooden stand; the brewery claims the glass was designed by the innkeeper Pauwel Kwak in the early 19th century for coachmen who would stop at his coaching tavern and brewery named "De Hoorn", though the beer and the glass were not launched until the 1980s.
